A more precise definition:

Notes: a hobo  is a migratory worker who likes to travel, a tramp  travels without working, and a bum  does not travel or work

    Indeed. The word "hobo" was coined during the Great Depression when men looking for work would hop on trains with their gardening hoes, hoping to find work as farm hands. They became known as "hoe-boys" which was eventually shortened to hobos. The end.
